Garam Masala Spiced Red Lentil

We love cooking red lentils because they are rich in protein, folate, dietary fiber, potassium and magnesium. Lentils help reduce high cholesterol, promote regular bowel movement, stablize blood sugar level, increase energy, and improve blood flow and oxygen in the body. It even helps with weight loss because it is low in calories and fat!

Did you know that 14 of a cup of red lentils have more protein, less fat and less cholesterol than one hard-boiled egg?

14 of a cup of red lentils has 13g of protein, 1g of fat and no cholesterol while a hard-boiled egg has 6g of protein, 5g of fat and 212 mg of cholesterol.

This recipe is one of our staples especially when we’re busy because it’s so easy to cook and pairs very well with rice or flat bread. If you’re not familiar with garam masala, please read this quick snippet about it.

We love spicy food! So if you’re not a spicy food fan, please omit the sambal oelek from the ingredients. Sambal oelek is a mixture of variety of chili peppers. It’s available in most grocery stores. We used Huy Fong Foods, Inc. Sambal Oelek because we are addicted to all their products! If you can’t find sambal oelek in stores near you, you can substitute sambal oelek with crushed red pepper flakes.
